Every year at least a dozen south-asian independent films screen at film festivals but fail to secure the distribution necessary to bring it to a growing audience. Without the backing of an expensive theatrical release it is challenging for niche films to reach larger audiences. Meanwhile, the audience for these films has grown and developed through the powerful reach of the internet, the media and a growing interest in the region, thereby increasing demand for these films. The Kollective's mission is to distribute quality films through multiple DVD, digital and broadcast platforms, adding theatrical and festival components where needed. The audience on each platform supplements our grass-roots marketing efforts by promoting the films through word of mouth, viral videos and in turn, by blogging to their wider networks. The ultimate result is a taste-making movement of films that builds upon an existing audience while returning revenue to filmmakers for previously unexploited platforms and portals.
