296 kilometers from the glitz and glamour of Bombay and Bollywood lies a small town where lifestyles are modest, excitement is rare, and religious tensions run high. Only one thing in Malegaon has the power to elate, amuse, and unite its residents—film. From hand-painting billboards that adorn every street corner, to emulating their favorite stars’ hairstyles, the people of Malegaon have a uniquely fierce fascination with the magic of movies.
Former screening house projectionist Shaik Nasir takes this adoration to a new level. Despite zero background in filmmaking and an equally inexperienced cast and crew, he uses local resources and a minimal budget to create his own, parodied versions of popular Hindi blockbusters. The result? Uproarious comedy that has become not only a form of entertainment for its community, but also a source of collective pride.
Documentary filmmaker Faiza Ahmad Khan takes us along as she follows Nasir’s latest venture and first foray into Hollywood—Superman. Watch as she chronicles how, armed with just a camera, a computer, and fervent ardor for their craft, Nasir and his friends set out on a hilarious, heartwarming, and above all inspiring mission to realize their celluloid dreams.
